Sorry that I haven’t posted in FOREVER – I’ve been super busy with shoots, but more corporate-type work and band stuff that I’m not going to bore y’all with. I have a wedding and e-session coming up this weekend though and my wedding season is also to be in full swing in a few weeks, so lots more to come!
I’ve gone back and forth about posting these pictures. They don’t follow my style, and I don’t want newcomers to my blog to be confused, but in the end, I just couldn’t resist. And, after all, it is a Casual Friday post – where I post my random personal stuff, and things that make me happy. This qualifies on both counts.
Anyway, on to the story – the camera that these shots came out of was found at a Goodwill for a dollar… and even when it was new, I’m sure that it wasn’t more than $5. It’s a cheap plastic Holga rip-off. It’s the kind of camera that you just push the shutter button, and I like the kind of cameras where you have full manual control. So, I admit, I was skeptical about it. In fact, I kept putting off using it, sure that it wasn’t going to worth it, but finally, two years after I bought it, I ran a roll through it. I walked around Wicker Park with my hubby and a friend of mine and just took pictures of random objects. I wasn’t too worried about getting amazing pictures because I figured I would end up throwing them out anyway (I mean, obviously, I took a picture of a vacuum sign), I just wanted to see what the film turned out like!
Final conclusion? What a fun camera! Lightleaks, vibrant colors, vignetting, soft edges, oh my! It definitely has its place and isn’t for everything, but absolutely usable. Maybe next time I use it I’ll take pictures of something other than doorways and mailboxes.
What do you all think?

I really love that door … great post
You’re not going to share a photo of this wonder-camera?!? For shame!
I love toy cameras for just this reason. I never know what I’m going to get, and that lack of control is totally freeing. I just walk away not caring what I’m going to get and I just enjoy the act of walking around snapping away. I also giggle like a maniacal schoolgirl after each shutter release, though I suspect that’s just me.
Oh yeah… and that door reminds me a lot of my friend Joe Alterio’s artwork – http://www.flickr.com/photos/joealterio
Corey – Thanks! It is a great door, I need to do a photo shoot incorporating it some day.
Mike – Toy cameras have their place, for sure… I just find myself always gravitating toward cameras with controls. I guess I’m a “control freak.” And yes, I think it’s just you that giggles like a schoolgirl. Please have Sarah videotape that some day
I can definitely see the similarities in artwork too. Joe isn’t out of Chicago, by chance, is he?
Dude. So cool!
