Hi, and welcome to my blog. My name is Tasha Schalk, and I am the photographer/owner of Redwall Photo. This blog is where I will post photos from my shoots and daily life, as well as recommendations for vendors and some tips for photographers. Stick around a while and get to know me. I'm fun.

As always, feel free to contact me at tasha@redwallphotography.com or 708.717.2811 if you have any questions, would just like to chat, or would like to book a consult. I'm located in the Chicago area, but do occasionally travel!

  • Kind of sad we're not going to SXSW this year. All of our friends are leaving us!

    Engagement :: Sami Jo & Zach

    The story of how Sami Jo & I met is different from any of the other clients I’ve had so far…

    I do music photography (it’s actually how I started out with photography), and one of the bands that I often shoot and have built up a relationship with is a band out of Minneapolis called Quietdrive. I shoot their live sets whenever I can, and have done three promo sessions with them. They’re great guys, you should check them out. Anyway. Sami Jo is a friend and fan of Quietdrive as well, so for several years, Sami Jo has seen my work through Quietdrive. We’ve chatted online, but never met, since Sam lives in Des Moines, and I’m in Chicago.

    Then one day, we realized that she was getting married soon, and while she already had a wedding photographer, she didn’t have anyone to take engagement photos. We quickly plotted that engagement photos should be taken, and what better way to do it than to plan it around a Quietdrive show? Luckily (it was fate!) there was an upcoming Quietdrive show that was in the middle-ish of our locations, so we met up a bit before the show and rocked it.

    These are the result. (more…)

    Engagement :: Cassie & Jimmy

    This is hands down one of my favorite shoots… pretty much ever.

    Cassie & Jimmy are friends of one of my best friends, so I knew that they were awesome people before we even had a consult… but I feel like I really got to know them through this shoot… and I love them! Cassie came to me with a ton of ideas for their e-session, which I always appreciate. Not only do these ideas give me a jumping off point for my creativity, but they also really incorporate the client’s personality and likes into the shoot… which always makes a shoot awesome. She loved details, wanted to incorporate green apples, and loved the vintage look. I loved it all! It was like a client/photographer match made in heaven.

    Cassie & Jimmy… I hope you like these as much as I do, and I can’t wait for the wedding!

    Engagement :: Mandy & Dan

    We’ve been having unseasonably cold weather this season in Chicago, and the day of the shoot was freezing! Aside from it being cold, we were right next to the lake, so we got a good dosing of that wind that Chicago is so famous for.  It was a cloudy day, which was a little disappointing (we were hoping for some golden light), but at least it wasn’t raining or snowing, which was in the forecast.  All in all, I say that we lucked out!

    For this shoot, Mandy picked Millennium Park as their backdrop, which was great. I’ve spent some time taking pictures around the Park, but have never done an engagement shoot there – and what an epic background! It was a challenge to keep random people out of the frame, but I think we got some great shots where it looks like they’re the only two around. If these two are so great in front of the camera during a freezing cold day amongst a thousand or so strangers, I can’t wait to see how much fun they’re going to be at their wedding! (more…)

    Engagement :: Elaine & Dan

    I love how all my clients are always up for anything.

    For this shoot, the big question was: “Can  you guys climb in a fountain?”  “Sure!” they said.  Awesome!

    I can’t wait for the wedding next summer!  It’s going to a blast! (more…)

    Engagement :: Cassie & Jimmy

    Two e-sessions this weekend!

    Today’s engagement session was vintage in theme, which is always my favorite. I had a hard time picking out a few pictures to edit for a sneak peek, because I love them all. I can’t wait to show the rest.

    And thanks to Cassie & Jimmy for being so fun! (more…)
